The Queen Mary is pleased
to announce that the last uniform of the late Captain John Treasure Jones has
returned home to the legendary vessel. Son of the late Captain Jones, David
Treasure Jones, proudly traveled from England to Long Beach on Wednesday,
September 19 for the first time since his last visit onboard the ship 35 years
ago to gift a piece of history back to the legendary Queen Mary.
On Wednesday, September 19 Captain Jones’ son, David Jones, presented Commodore Everette Hoard and the Queen Mary team with a piece of history and nostalgia - Captain John Treasure Jones’ last uniform. The uniform is the captain's Dress Blues, which is the appropriate uniform for winter on the North Atlantic Ocean. During the Queen Mary’s voyaging days Captain Jones often entertained famous passengers in this beautiful uniform. His service ribbons earned in World War II and for his service in the Royal Naval Reserve are still proudly attached. Captain Jones’ last uniform will be displayed on the historic vessel for all guests to enjoy.
“Captain Jones mentored me for 10 years. I can picture him in his crisp dress blues strolling the ships halls now,” commented Commodore Everette Hoard. “We are so honored that Captain Jones’ son is sharing his father’s memorabilia with us. I too believe it’s what Captain Jones would have wanted. He once said: ‘I don’t think I’d ever want to command another ship after commanding the Queen Mary.’ It feels like a part of history has truly returned home.”
Following four decades of serving in the British Merchant Navy and making his way through the ranks as Chief Officer and Staff Captain, John Treasure Jones served as the last and final captain of the Queen Mary from 1966 to 1967. Captain Jones sailed across the Atlantic in 1967 to bring the iconic vessel to her final resting place in Long Beach.
The Queen Mary is honored to welcome home the last uniform of the late Captain John Treasure Jones and share the iconic uniform with Queen Mary’s guests and passengers for years to come.
